Every ring size, in every country, ultimately maps back to one physical measurement, the inner diameter of the ring in millimeters. Method 1: measure a ring that already fits

This is the most reliable way to measure an existing ring, and the best answer to "how to check ring size at home" if a ring is available. Take a ring the person already wears comfortably on the correct finger, not a ring from a different finger, sizes vary between fingers on the same hand.

1. 1. Lay the ring flat on a hard surface.
2. 2. Measure straight across the inside edge, from one inner wall to the opposite inner wall. This is the diameter.

Common mistake: measuring the outside width of the band instead of the inner diameter. The outside number is always larger and will give you a size that's too big.

Method 2: measure finger circumference directly

Use this when there's no existing ring to measure, and you're wondering how to find your ring size from scratch. A strip of paper works better than string, string stretches slightly under tension and inflates the reading.

1. 1. Cut a strip of paper about 1cm wide and 10cm long.
2. 2. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not compressing the skin.
3. 3. Mark where the strip overlaps itself with a pen.
4. 4. Lay it flat and measure from the start to the mark, in millimeters.

Common mistake: measuring in the morning when hands are cold and slightly smaller, or right after exercise or a hot shower when they're swollen. Measure at room temperature, in the evening, for the most typical reading.

Method 3: how to use an on-screen ring sizer
